Environmental Studies is concerned with the historical, theoretical, geographical and policy implications of the human use, construction and transformation of the environment. There is a focus on contemporary environmental concerns, including how and why these concerns have risen to the forefront of current policy agendas, how social, economic and technological systems mediate our interaction with the environment, how these systems vary across the world and evolve with time and the ways in which environmental decisions are made and controversies resolved. A Doctor of Philosophy Degree requires three years full-time study and completion of a written thesis. The thesis is reviewed by members of the Australian and international scientific academic community. In the course of their research, PhD students must make a distinct contribution to the knowledge within their specific discipline. Ideally, this will result in the publication of original research findings in peer-reviewed journals of international standing.
A completed Masters by Research from UNSW with a substantial research component and demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high quality research thesis; or an equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution as determined by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee (HDC).The minimum requirement for UNSW Scholarship with admission to a PhD is: a four year Bachelors degree with Honours Class I from an Australian institution or equivalent research qualification experience. This qualification must be in a field relevant to the proposed area of research.
