TOEFL Scores Overview 

The TOEFL scores are graded between a range of 0-120. Remember that TOEFL scores are published within six days from the date of the TOEFL exam. ETS (Educational Training Service) evaluates the TOEFL exam score and finds the proficiency level of a candidate in the English language. There are four sections in the TOEFL exam on which the candidate will be assessed on. The parameters include reading, listening, speaking and writing. How are TOEFL Scores Calculated? 

The four sections of the TOEFL syllabus are evaluated on a range of 0-30 each. The TOEFL scores are calculated by converting the raw scores to scaled scores.

How to Opt for a Review of the TOEFL Score Report?

The candidate can only request a review of TOEFL’s speaking and/or writing portions. It must be requested within 30 days of the test. Additionally, you must note that an extra payment of US$80 must be made for the review of each section. If you make an appeal for two sections, then the total payment would be US$160. 

Note the following points before applying for review:

• You can request the TOEFL Score Report Review only once.
• If you need to review both of your sections, like speaking and writing, the request must be made simultaneously, not individually.
• Once the review is complete, the new scores will be the final scores.
• If you have already sent your scores to the university, then the TOEFL scores cannot be reviewed. 

TOEFL Score Validity

The TOEFL score is valid for a period of 2 years from the exam date. The validity of the TOEFL exam is only considered from the date you took the exam and not when your results were published. You will be able to access the TOEFL score within 6-7 business days and receive your PDF scores within eight business days.

TOEFL Best Score: The TOEFL Best Score is 110-120

Average TOEFL score: The average TOEFL score is around 90.

TOEFL Minimum Score: You need at least a minimum score of 100 to be considered for university admission.

TOEFL Maximum Score (TOEFL Total Score): The maximum TOEFL score one can obtain is 120.

TOEFL Score Report

Now, as you have gone through some important details of the TOEFL scores, let us discuss TOEFL Score reporting and what it means. While you register for the TOEFL test, you are supposed to designate up to 4 institutions that will receive your TOEFL scores. This is included in the TOEFL fee. 

Aspirants who wish to send the TOEFL scores to more than four designated institutions should pay additional fees to the ETS. Moreover, if the candidate has already designated an institution to receive the TOEFL scores, they can’t further review the scores of the speaking and/or writing sections.

How to send TOEFL scores to universities?

Your test results are valid for two years from the date of the test taken. During this period, a candidate can request additional reports with the following methods at US$20 per institution/ agency.

Through Your ETS Account

• Login into your account and choose the “Send Additional Score Reports” option.
• You can pay via debit/credit card, PayPal or e-check.
• Score reports are mailed to you within 3-5 business days after you have initiated the request. 

By Fax

• Fill in the sections in TOEFL iBT® Request for Additional Score Report Form (PDF).
• Once you complete the form, fax it to +1-610-290-8972, along with your debit/credit card details and appointment number.
• To avoid additional charges to your debit/credit card, write “DUPLICATE” in huge characters on the form if you use the same fax more than once.
• Once the ETS receives your request, your score reports will be mailed within ten business days.

By Mail

• Fill in the sections in the TOEFL iBT Additional Score Report Request Form (PDF).
• Send it along with your money to the following address:

TOEFL vs IELTS Score

The TOEFL writing and speaking sections are evaluated based on the writing style, vocabulary range and grammar. In comparison, the IELTS test is assessed based on specific criteria such as grammar, coherence, logic, and fluency. For example, in an essay with a logical flow of opinions but poor grammar, you will be able to get good scores in a TOEFL exam. 

However, an essay with excellent vocabulary and grammar but a poor ability to express an opinion can still get higher IELTS scores. Your score is evaluated on a scale of 1-9 in the IELTS exam, and TOEFL has a maximum score of 120 points from a single examination.

Cancelling TOEFL Scores 

Once the test is completed, you have the choice to report or cancel your scores.

If you want your TOEFL scores to be reported, they will become part of your record and will be reported to you. If you had designated any score recipients, they would receive the score, and the TOEFL scores cannot be cancelled once you choose to report them. 

If you want to cancel your TOEFL scores, they won’t be notified to you or the score recipient, and you will not receive a refund. 

You must cancel all your sections if you decide to cancel your scores. You will not be able to cancel one section alone and report the scores of other sections. 

How to interpret your TOEFL scores?

Your scores depend on the performance of the questions you answered in the test. You must answer at least 1 section each in the listening and reading sections. Also, write at least one essay and attempt one speaking session to receive an official score. You will get four scaled section scores and a total score:

• Reading (0-30) 
• Listening (0-30) 
• Speaking (0-30) 
• Writing (0-30) 
• Total Score (0-120)

This is the scaled score of 4 test sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing). They all range from 0-30; every section is an individual measure, and every measure has its own scale. 

Therefore, the scaled scores you got in a specific section can be compared to those in the same section on different test dates. You also need to note that comparing scaled scores across different sections is inappropriate.

• All score reports have MyBest® scores and traditional scores from your chosen test date. 
• This feature integrates your best scores for every section from all the valid iBT test scores over the last two years.
• It allows you to show your best performance in every skill area.

How to reinstate your TOEFL scores?

If you had cancelled the scores at the test centre but changed your mind, your cancelled scores can be reinstated. However, the ETS should receive your request within 60 days from the test date. You will be able to either reinstate your scores with your ETS account or print, download, fax or email the Score Reinstatement Request Form to the TOEFL services. 

The reinstatement fee would be US$20, and scores will be reinstated as well as reported in around three weeks after your request and payment are received. Once the scores are reinstated, they will be available in your account or sent to the designated institutions. 

Note: This applies only if the test taker cancels the scores. If the ETS cancels the scores, they can’t be reinstated. 

How to order additional TOEFL score reports?

Additional TOEFL score reports can be sent to the designated institutions at a fee of US$20 per recipient. Score reports can be ordered via mobile app or online after completing the Additional Score Report Request Form. 

The order might be returned to you and not processed if you don’t include accurate and complete information and the appropriate fee. Designated institutions can’t be deleted or changed once you submit your form, and no refunds will be issued.

ETS TOEFL Results

Aspirants who have taken the English language test will be able to access the TOEFL scores or results in their ETS account approximately six days after the test date. Once the TOEFL scores are available, candidates will be contacted through their registered email ID. 

The candidate should download a PDF score report of their TOEFL results once it is declared. TOEFL score reports in paper form are also available via mail, but the candidate should have requested it before the exam. Additionally, the fee paid by the candidate when filling out the TOEFL application form includes a maximum of four TOEFL score reports.

You can check the TOEFL results using the following methods:

Via ETS Account

You will be able to view the TOEFL results in the ETS account six days after the test date. An email will be sent to you once the TOEFL results are declared. You can access the TOEFL score through an online account or official app. The scores can be downloaded as PDFs within eight days from the examination date.

Via Mail

If you require hard copies of your results, you must make a request before attending the examination, and you will receive it via mail after your request is taken. In this case, the TOEFL results can take 11 days to be declared. Moreover, the TOEFL exam results time can depend on the availability of postal services.

TOEFL iBT Results

You will get your iBT scores in your ETS account. The timeframe to receive your iBT scores depends on the type of test you took.

When does the TOEFL result come out? TOEFL iBT Results Time
