Florida International University has a preeminent reputation in the field of Environmental Science. Research and education in environmental science at FIU is represented by the School of Environment, Arts and Society (SEAS) including the Marine Sciences Program within the College of Arts, Sciences and Education (CASE), by the interdisciplinary Institute of Water and Environment which houses numerous programs and centers including the Southeastern Environmental Research Center (SERC), Center for Coastal Ocean Research (CCOR), Sea Level Solutions Center and CREST Center for Aquatic Chemistry, and the Florida Coastal Everglades Long-Term Environmental Research (LTER) program. The Ph.D. program in Environmental Chemistry is situated within the current doctoral program in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The requirements of the Environmental Chemistry track are similar to those of the Chemistry Ph.D., however, the majority of coursework, and dissertation research, are specifically focused on the area of environmental chemistry. Through focused coursework and research, therefore, graduates of the program develop a strong expertise in both environmental science and chemistry, and are enabled to find employment within industry, government and academia.
