Economics students learn how markets shape incentives and economic decision-making. Economic analysis is used to analyze many public policy issues such as the environment, income distribution, why some countries are rich while others are poor, the causes and consequences of recessions, the design and impact of government regulation, tax policy, Federal Reserve policy and many more. The department’s curriculum helps students develop the quantitative, analytical and communication skills valued by employers. Economics students are recruited for a wide array of positions as analysts, research associates, managers and occupations where quantitative and data skills are valued. The major in the College of Humanities and Sciences is designed for students who desire the flexibility and breadth afforded by a liberal arts degree. Students who want to combine training in economics with exposure to the business disciplines should consider the major in the School of Business.
