This area of study helps students to gain the knowledge and skills to pursue careers in community wellness, health promotion and leisure services, graduates may lead and manage health and wellness programs and services focusing on community wellness, fitness, and special populations. Its broad purpose is to examine the physical, social, spiritual, emotional and intellectual components of health and wellness. It applies to the needs of individuals and groups across all ages and abilities in occupational or leisure settings. Emphasis is placed on providing experiential learning opportunities in the community coupled with relevant theory and concepts. For example students have done small group projects conducting leisure education assessments with at risk youth, contributed to planning efforts for active transportation in the local area, and undertaken assessments of quality of life for persons with mental challenges.
