More than just savings for a rainy day, financial planners help analyze financial information for clients and determine strategies for meeting their financial objectives. Everything from bank account records, income tax returns, life and disability insurance records, pension plan information and wills are considered to develop a financial plan. As a personal financial planning major at Western Michigan University, you will learn interviewing and analytical skills to help you become financially savvy for your future career. You should be passionate about working with people and willing to fine tune and develop your communication skills to work with clients. Upon successful completion of the recommended coursework, you will be eligible to sit for the CFP exam. Several student and professional organizations are available through WMU to help you make the right contacts in the industry and learn about the latest trends. They include the Financial Services Club, Financial Management Association, Society of Financial Service Professionals, CPCU Society, Financial Planning Association and West Michigan CFA Society.
You must have successfully completed a United States Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification) Equivalent qualifications may also include a recognized post-secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades. Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee entry. Your application will still need to be assessed and accepted. If you dont meet the entry requirements, there may be other programs you are eligible for that can lead you to your preferred program.
